TUESDAY Topic Sentences (Writing) 16/3/21
NOTES:
Every paragraph should include a topic sentence that identifies the main idea of the paragraph.
Generally, the topic sentence appears at the beginning of the paragraph. It is often the paragraph’s very first sentence.
A paragraph’s topic sentence must be general enough to express the paragraph’s overall subject. But it should be specific enough that the reader can understand the paragraph’s main subject and point.
a) Writing topic sentences
1. The topic sentence expresses what the paragraph is about. It should include two key things:
- The topic of the paragraph
- The central point of the paragraph.
2. After the topic sentence, you expand on the point with examples and other information.
b) Identifying topic sentences when reading
1. Identify the topic. As you did earlier, figure out the general subject of the entire paragraph.
2. Locate the most general sentence. This sentence must be broad enough to include all of the other ideas in the paragraph. That is the topic sentence.
