Wednesday Topic Sentences (Writing) 3/3/21
NOTES:
Every paragraph should include a topic sentence that identifies the main idea of the paragraph. A topic sentence also states the point the writer wishes to make about that subject.
Generally, the topic sentence appears at the beginning of the paragraph. It is often the paragraph’s very first sentence.
A paragraph’s topic sentence must be general enough to express the paragraph’s overall subject. But it should be specific enough that the reader can understand the paragraph’s main subject and point.
a) Writing topic sentences
The topic sentence expresses what the paragraph is about. It should include two key things:
a) The topic of the paragraph
b) The central point of the paragraph.
After the topic sentence, you expand on the point with examples and other information.
b) Identifying topic sentences when reading
1. Identify the topic. As you did earlier, figure out the general subject of the entire paragraph.
2. Locate the most general sentence (the topic sentence). This sentence must be broad enough to include all of the other ideas in the paragraph.
3. Study the rest of the paragraph. The topic sentence must make the rest of the paragraph meaningful. It is the one idea that ties all of the other details together.
After you have finished writing the notes in your book, complete this individually
